Debt: The next big American crisis? Instead of accumulating wealth, many are falling further behind on payments. Dateline looks into a fundamental economic problem: the debt epidemic.

Chriss Snyder has $25,000 dollars in credit card debt that she’s trying to get under control. She describes a potential trap that could cost you big money. The economy is in freefall, and no one’s sure where rock bottom is. And as the mortgage crisis and mounting job losses melt away the American dream, another fundamental economic problem is being exposed: America’s debt epidemic.

Payday Loan Versus Credit Card Cash Advance

If you’re in a cash crunch, two of the options that have probably occurred to you have been the payday loan or taking a cash advance on your credit card.A credit card cash advance seems like a reasonable answer to a fast cash need. But the truth is, it may not be everything its cracked up to be. With a payday loan, you pay one upfront fee before paying back the loan on your next payday.

Payday Loans
Most of the time, the fee for a payday loan is somewhere between $17 and $25 for each $100 you get in a payday loan. In some states, however, that can go as high as $30 per $100. For example, you might take out a payday loan for $500, and in two weeks need to pay back $587.50.

The advantage that a Payday loan has is that it’s short term. Once it’s paid back, it is over and done with. It doesn’t drag on, the way that a credit card cash advance payment can drag on.

Still, the payday loan isn’t always that clear. Most consumers who get a payday loan will have between eight and 13 payday loans per year at their payday loan lender. What often happens is that customers wind up taking out an additional payday loan in order to pay off the first, incurring fees each time.

Credit Card Cash Advances

Taking a credit card cash advance may be another option. While the interest rate on a credit card cash advance is likely to be less than the interest rate on a payday loan, the rate is still usually pretty high. You can wind up with an APR of between 15 and 25 percent.

In addition, most credit card companies will use your monthly payments to pay off the items with the lowest interest rate first. This means that your purchases will be paid off long before that higher-rate cash advance is paid off. Depending on what kind of a balance you carry on your credit card, which can mean that it will take months if not years to pay off the cash advance portion of your credit card bill.

Which is Better?

Again, each of the options has their own benefits. If you can take a payday loan and pay it back immediately, without needing another one, you’re better off than a credit card cash advance. However, if you know it will take some time to be able to pay off the debt, a credit card may be a better option.
On the other hand, if you have a high credit card balance for purchases, it can still be months or years before the cash advance is paid off. In these instances, a payday loan is probably better for you.

Are you going through a short term cash crunch and are planning to opt for payday loans? Before you consider using them, view this video about the drawbacks and the pitfalls of payday loans. Get an insight into different types of payday loans, how they work and what harm can they cause to your financial health.

When applying for the payday loan pay special attention to the agreement. Rates range from 10% – 30% which are considered high, and failing to fulfill the repayment on time will consequence in doubling the interest for the next repayment schedule. You have 30 days maximum to pay back the loan with the interest, depending on your repayment plan. People in debt are recommended not to use a payday loan as a debt consolidation loan because they will find themselves deeper in debt. Borrowers should pay extreme caution when dealing with online lenders due to fraud issues and reading the fine print is essential.

If you don’t have a fixed workplace or salary you will not get the payday loan no matter how much you beg and promise for it. If you don’t have a checking account you can’t write a check meaning you cannot secure the loan and the lender will not process your order. If you need cash advance but don’t qualify for a payday loan for any reason, ask friends and family to lend you the money. Anyway a payday loan only supports small amounts of money therefore, asking your close ones shouldn’t be too difficult. If you haven’t managed to get the cash you need, consider applying for an unsecured personal loan you might even find that time wasn’t so important after all.

How Do Criminals Steal Your Identity?

To an identity theft criminal, your personal information can provide instant access to your credit record, financial accounts, or other assets. This Video explains the many ways criminals attempt to steal your information (skimming, dumpster diving, phishing, spyware, etc). Shows in detail ATM skimming machine. Also explains what criminals do with your stolen data.

Skimming” involves using hand held computers to read and store the information encoded on the magnetic strip of an ATM or credit card when it is used legitimately. Once stored, the information can be entered onto any other card with a magnetic strip. This can also be done manually by anyone who has access to your credit card by just coping or memorizing your number when you hand your credit card to a business.

“Phishing” is the act of sending false emails proclaiming that they are from your bank or Ebay or PayPal, and asking you to enter your personal information to clear an alleged “problem”. They can be as elaborate as setting up fake web sites that look just like the real ones

“Dumpster diving” is well known for people going through your curbside garbage or at your place of business to obtain copies of statements, checks, credit card offers, making it easier for thieves to get control over your accounts. With the amount of junk mail you get, you think nothing of just tossing it into the trash, including all those annoying credit card applications and other mail you are through reading.
“Hacking“. With today’s technology, criminals can obtain your personal information without leaving the comfort of their own home. They can purchase your information through online databases, or can get it illegally by hacking into either your computer or into any database that has your information already stored.

“Spyware“. In exchange for free software or services, often times spyware, sometimes known as “cookies”, will be secretly placed into your computer. It may be as innocent as identifying your online surfing and spending habits, sending information to marketers every time you visit a website. Or, if it is a malicious spyware, it can gather personal information or even change your internet settings, causing a loss of your identity or crashing your computer.

Basically, anywhere you have provided information, from the earliest school, to your most recent medical visit, can be a target.

Here is the video on Youtube:

Jim Joyce took credit for ruining history but that doesn’t take umpires off the hook. OK, it’s a tough job to be an umpire but that’s why you get paid six figures and get to fly first class and stay in five star hotels. In short, NO ONE is feeling …

(Reuters) – Bank of America said on Tuesday it will no longer charge overdraft fees on debit card purchases as of this summer, a move that may cost millions in fee income.

The change will eliminate one of the most common overdraft charges for Bank of America customers.

More than 60 percent of all overdraft fees charged by the bank are for debit card transactions, company spokeswoman Anne Pace said.

The move is the second major change in the largest U.S. bank’s overdraft policies, and will affect the largest debit card network in the country.

The first change, in September 2009, curbed the number and amount of overdraft charges customers could receive in a given day.

Under the latest move, customers will simply be declined if they try to make purchases with debit cards without having adequate funds in their checking accounts.

Pace said the move comes after months of customer research and consultation with consumer advocates.

Customers said they would prefer to have a transaction declined, than have the bank allow them to spend money that was not in their accounts, Pace said.

Overdraft fees have been a hot button issue with consumers and politicians alike, with the U.S. Congress debating last Fall legislation to curb such fees.

The bank did not have an immediate projection for what the changes will cost the bank in fee income.

The changes won’t take effect until third quarter, with a reduction in fee income to accelerate in fourth quarter 2010.

After the first round of changes took hold in fourth quarter 2009, overdraft fee income dipped by $160 million, the bank reported on January 15.
