How Do Criminals Steal Your Identity?

To an identity theft criminal, your personal information can provide instant access to your credit record, financial accounts, or other assets. This Video explains the many ways criminals attempt to steal your information (skimming, dumpster diving, phishing, spyware, etc). Shows in detail ATM skimming machine. Also explains what criminals do with your stolen data.

Skimming” involves using hand held computers to read and store the information encoded on the magnetic strip of an ATM or credit card when it is used legitimately. Once stored, the information can be entered onto any other card with a magnetic strip. This can also be done manually by anyone who has access to your credit card by just coping or memorizing your number when you hand your credit card to a business.

“Phishing” is the act of sending false emails proclaiming that they are from your bank or Ebay or PayPal, and asking you to enter your personal information to clear an alleged “problem”. They can be as elaborate as setting up fake web sites that look just like the real ones

“Dumpster diving” is well known for people going through your curbside garbage or at your place of business to obtain copies of statements, checks, credit card offers, making it easier for thieves to get control over your accounts. With the amount of junk mail you get, you think nothing of just tossing it into the trash, including all those annoying credit card applications and other mail you are through reading.
“Hacking“. With today’s technology, criminals can obtain your personal information without leaving the comfort of their own home. They can purchase your information through online databases, or can get it illegally by hacking into either your computer or into any database that has your information already stored.

“Spyware“. In exchange for free software or services, often times spyware, sometimes known as “cookies”, will be secretly placed into your computer. It may be as innocent as identifying your online surfing and spending habits, sending information to marketers every time you visit a website. Or, if it is a malicious spyware, it can gather personal information or even change your internet settings, causing a loss of your identity or crashing your computer.

Basically, anywhere you have provided information, from the earliest school, to your most recent medical visit, can be a target.

(Reuters) – Bank of America said on Tuesday it will no longer charge overdraft fees on debit card purchases as of this summer, a move that may cost millions in fee income.

The change will eliminate one of the most common overdraft charges for Bank of America customers.

More than 60 percent of all overdraft fees charged by the bank are for debit card transactions, company spokeswoman Anne Pace said.

The move is the second major change in the largest U.S. bank’s overdraft policies, and will affect the largest debit card network in the country.

The first change, in September 2009, curbed the number and amount of overdraft charges customers could receive in a given day.

Under the latest move, customers will simply be declined if they try to make purchases with debit cards without having adequate funds in their checking accounts.

Pace said the move comes after months of customer research and consultation with consumer advocates.

Customers said they would prefer to have a transaction declined, than have the bank allow them to spend money that was not in their accounts, Pace said.

Overdraft fees have been a hot button issue with consumers and politicians alike, with the U.S. Congress debating last Fall legislation to curb such fees.

The bank did not have an immediate projection for what the changes will cost the bank in fee income.

The changes won’t take effect until third quarter, with a reduction in fee income to accelerate in fourth quarter 2010.

After the first round of changes took hold in fourth quarter 2009, overdraft fee income dipped by $160 million, the bank reported on January 15.

Chase, Sears, Bank of America, Capitol One, and US Bank among the top five worst offenders

In 2009 the biggest culprits from our recent survey includes Chase, Sears, Bank of America, Capitol One, and US Bank. Both Visa and MasterCard were well represented.

Late Fees, “Over the Limit” Charges and Interest Rates

If you take the time to search for the term "credit card complaints" on the Internet, you’ll find thousands of message boards, forums and blogs which contain reports from consumers about the unethical practices of credit card companies.

As well, all the social media sites and viral sites like Twitter and YouTube is becoming a platform for the people’s choice.

Why, then, are so few complaints filed against credit card companies with the United States government?

There are no government agencies that regulate credit card companies, which means that consumers are defrauded every day. If you feel that you have been treated unfairly by your credit card company, file a complaint.

Top Reasons to File a Complaint Against Your Credit Card Company

There are plenty of reasons why you might need to file a complaint against a credit card company, but a few a more common than others.

Late Fees - Even if you send your payment on time every month, credit card companies can find a way to charge late fees which can start to mount up. For example, let’s say that you write a check to your credit card company but forget to include your account number on the check. The credit card company can claim that it took them longer to process your payment because of your failure to include the account number, and subsequently charge a late fee. Things like this should be reported.

“Over the limit” Charges – There are usually hefty fees associated with charging more than your credit limit, and irresponsible spenders deserve to incur those charges. However, if you are "pushed" over the limit by late fees, finance charges and other things that are beyond your control, you should file a complaint. Credit card companies make money by charging fees on top of fees, and you shouldn’t be forced to take that kind of abuse.

Interest Rates - In recent years, more and more credit card companies have been sued for charging interest rates higher than the ones advertised to their customers. For example, if you fill out a credit card application and receive an approval for a 9.9% interest rate, you should file a complaint if you receive a bill with 10.9% interest calculated. This is unethical and an abuse of credit card practices.

File a Complaint With Your Credit Card Company First

Give your credit card company the benefit of the doubt and bring their oversight to their attention. Simply call them and let them know that you believe you were charged differently than what should have been, and explain that you want your account changed to reflect the appropriate balance.

It doesn’t hurt to add that you will be cutting up their credit card if they can’t provide good customer service, but if they don’t comply, you’ll have to go to the next step.

File a Complaint with the Attorney General

You can find the contact information for your state’s Attorney General’s office at www.naag.org. Each website will have a complaint form which can be filled out with the specifics of your complaint. If the attorney general receives enough complaints about a specific credit card company, an investigation will be launched.

However, the attorney general does not fight individual battles and if no one files complaints, nothing will ever be done.

File a Complaint with the Better Business Bureau

As far as your individual case is concerned, you might get farther with the BBB than with anyone else. The Better Business Bureau will attempt to help both parties reach negotiations about the dispute. Most companies do not want unsatisfactory records with the BBB, and will do whatever they can to mediate the dispute.

Be sure to leave as much information as possible, including the amount of the charge you are disputing, names of credit card company representatives with whom you have spoken, and copies of letters you have previously sent.
