How Your Credit History Affects Job Opportunities
Please note it is your responsibility to evaluate the accuracy, completeness and usefulness of any information, opinion or advice contained in the content below. Most people are unaware that having a bad credit rating will affect your chances of employment and it is perfectly legal for them to refuse to hire you because of a low credit score. And thanks to modern technology it is easier than ever to go on line and check the credit. Which is exactly what most employers will do.
If you will be handling money or have access to any type of sensitive documents the companies will be much more concerned with security and theft. The law requires you to give permission for the company to access your credit records. If you refuse to give permission and want to keep your credit history private keep in mind that your refusal probably raises a red flag just like bad credit does. Studies have shown that when a company is faced with two equally qualified candidates but differing in their financial situations the company is far more likely to hire the one with good credit.
As a general rule the biggest companies that use credit reports for employment purposes are the financial services, government employers and the chemical/pharmaceutical ones. If you will be privy to personally identifying information in any company and have bad credit there is a fairly good chance of not being hired. Today, more and more employers are beginning to use a credit report as an indicator of your financial honesty and personal integrity. The good news is that a bad credit history does not have to be the end of the road. There are things that can be done to raise your credit score dramatically.
